How Long Do EV Batteries Last? Lifespan in Numbers (2026)
The traction battery is the most expensive component of an electric car, and its lifespan decides purchase, sale and residual value. The worry that "after a few years the battery is dead and the car a write-off" persists. The data paints a different picture: modern traction batteries age more slowly than many feared in the early days of electric mobility. Here are the numbers.
What "lifespan" means for an EV battery
A traction battery rarely dies overnight. It gradually loses usable capacity: through calendar ageing (time, temperature, state of charge while parked) and cycle ageing (charging and discharging). The measure for this is the State of Health (SoH): 100% is the condition when new; 90% means nine tenths of the original capacity remain usable.
Important context: the often-quoted "end of life" at 70 or 80% remaining capacity is a convention, not a defect: below that, the loss of range is considered noticeable. A car with 75% keeps driving, and retired vehicle batteries frequently work for years afterwards in stationary storage.
How fast EV batteries really age
The largest publicly available fleet evaluation comes from telematics provider Geotab: more than 22,700 electric vehicles across 21 model lines. The result: on average, batteries lose 2.3% of capacity per year. Projected forward, around 82% remains after eight years.
Two patterns run through the data:
- The curve is not linear. Many batteries lose slightly faster in the first year or two, after which degradation flattens out. A steep start is not an alarm signal.
- High mileage does not mean an empty battery. An analysis of more than 7,000 vehicles (P3 Group) found an average of 87% SoH after 300,000 km, with the caveat that data at very high mileages is still thin.
Individual vehicles deviate from these averages in both directions. That is why, when buying used, what counts is the condition of the specific car, not the average.
The warranty: a contractual floor, not the end of life
Across manufacturers, a warranty standard has established itself: 8 years or 160,000 km, with a guaranteed minimum capacity of 70%, whichever comes first. Tesla, for example, warrants the Model 3 and Model Y (RWD) for 8 years or 160,000 km, the Long Range and Performance variants for 192,000 km, each with at least 70% capacity retention.
The warranty is the floor the manufacturer stands behind. The fleet data above shows the average sits well above it.
From November 2026: legal minimum durability
With UN regulation GTR 22 and the Euro 7 regulation, battery durability gets legal thresholds for the first time: newly type-approved vehicles must retain at least 80% of their energy after 5 years or 100,000 km, and at least 72% after 8 years or 160,000 km. For you as an owner or buyer this means: the SoH is moving from a niche expert figure to an officially defined quantity — and a documented battery state at the point of sale is becoming the norm.
What influences lifespan
Three factors appear in practically every study:
- Temperature. Sustained heat accelerates calendar ageing; vehicles in hot regions degrade measurably faster.
- State of charge while parked. Sitting at 100% (or near 0%) for weeks stresses the cells. For everyday use many manufacturers recommend a charge limit around 80%; charging to full for long trips is expressly fine.
- Rapid-charging share. Very frequent DC rapid charging shows a moderate but measurable effect in fleet data: uncritical as a travel tool, the more expensive habit as a daily default.
Through all of this, the battery management system protects the cells automatically. You can slow ageing down, but you can hardly break anything acutely by charging.
How to see the state of your own battery
For lifespan statistics the average is interesting — for buying, selling and residual value only your specific car counts. A single SoH reading is a snapshot that can fluctuate with the state of the on-board computer's calibration.
