Field study · wave 1

Help us put a method to the test

We estimate the condition of a vehicle battery from ordinary charging history. This study examines how stable that estimate is on repetition and how often a result is produced at all.

The results will be published even if they go against us.

Who can take part

All points must apply:

What does not fit the analysis

Vehicles from our own circle are not excluded, but they are marked, reported separately and kept out of the headline figures.

What happens

  1. Connect

Connect your Tesla account once, with read-only access. It takes a few minutes.

  2. Measure

After that, nothing. Drive and charge as usual. We read data when the vehicle is awake anyway — we never wake your vehicle.

  3. Certificate

As soon as enough usable data points have accumulated, we issue your signed certificate.

  4. Repetition

About four weeks later, the second certificate. Comparing the two is the real point of the study.

What you get

There is no money. Cash for taking part in a study strikes us as the wrong signal.

We do not promise a reference measurement. It belongs to a possible second wave and will only be asked about if that wave actually happens.

What happens to your data

Through the official interface we read: state of charge, remaining energy, odometer, charging sessions, battery temperature and timestamps. Your email address and the details from the application form are added to that. Of your postcode we store only the first two digits — that is enough for the climate region.

We do not request location data. On the Fleet API the position comes from a separate endpoint (drive_state), and that one is not part of our query — we read charge_state, vehicle_state, gui_settings, vehicle_config and climate_state only. We request no command scopes either: the vehicle_device_data scope is read-only, so we cannot wake or control your vehicle even technically.

Your vehicle identification number is stored in encrypted form only. Analysis and publication are exclusively pseudonymous: without names, without vehicle identification numbers, without location details.

We delete your vehicle's raw data 24 months after the end of the study. Application data of people who do not take part is deleted no later than three months after the end of the study. The pseudonymous analysis dataset stays published permanently, because it is the basis of the results.

You can stop at any time, without giving reasons and without disadvantage. We then delete your personal study data. Aggregated results already published cannot be withdrawn; a certificate already issued remains yours and remains valid.

Limits

Current demand

We do not invite in order of arrival but by demand. This is how the strata look right now:

Wanted

  • under 15,000 km4 of 6 places free
  • mostly fast charging6 of 8 places free

Full

  • Tesla Model 3all 20 places taken
  • Tesla Model Yall 20 places taken
  • LFP batteryall 12 places taken
  • over 100,000 kmall 10 places taken
  • first registered 2019 to 2021all 8 places taken

Enrolled: 40

Public participant list

We are examining our own method. That is why the protocol with all analysis rules is fixed in advance, and why the participant list is public from inclusion onwards.

Within seven days of your inclusion, a line about your vehicle appears in a public list — for example “S-017 · Model 3 LR 2021 · NMC · 90–110 thousand km”. No entry is ever deleted: leaving is added, not removed.

This is the core of the credibility. Anyone on the list from day one cannot later quietly disappear from the analysis — not even when their result is inconvenient.

Visible: identifier, model, variant, model year, battery type, mileage range and status of participation.

Not visible: your name, your vehicle identification number, your place of residence.

Wave 1 stopped taking vehicles on 7 September 2026. On that day 40 vehicles were enrolled, among them 14 with LFP cells and 11 with more than 100,000 km. That met the condition the protocol had set in advance for the end of enrolment.

The measurement phase continues. We freeze the data set on 16 November 2026 and analyse it after that; nothing changes for participants until then.

We are glad to note you down for a second wave. One click is enough:

The uncomfortable questions

Is my car woken up or the battery put under load?

No. We have read-only access and never call the wake function. We read data when the vehicle is awake anyway. That is exactly why we temporarily do not see sleeping vehicles — it is a deliberate decision.

What if my result turns out badly?

Then that is what your certificate says, and you know more than before. The publication only contains aggregated values; your individual value is not linked to you. You can drop out at any time.

Do you sell my data?

No. There is no transfer to third parties. What gets published is a pseudonymous analysis dataset without names, without vehicle identification numbers and without location details.

Why should I believe a company that tests its own product?

You should not. That is why the protocol with all analysis rules is preregistered beforehand in the Open Science Framework — unchangeable and time-stamped, that is why we publish the participant list at inclusion rather than at the end, that is why dataset and analysis code are open — and that is why we have committed to publishing whatever the outcome. Hold us to those commitments.

What is in it for you?

We find out whether our method holds up, and we get the data to improve it. And if it holds up, we have a defensible number instead of a claim. That is the whole point.

Can I see my raw data?

Yes, at any time as a file — states of charge, energy values, timestamps. Anyone using TeslaMate or Teslemetry can check our numbers directly. We welcome discrepancies; that is exactly what the study is for.

What happens after the study?

Data collection stops automatically. You decide whether monitoring should continue. If you do nothing, nothing happens.

Do I get paid?

No — you get your certificate and the monitoring free of charge. Cash for taking part in a study strikes us as the wrong signal.
