What the figure measures: Nominal energy of the pack: charge times nominal voltage, about 239 Ah × 355 V. The figure comes from an unofficial source and is not one the battery management system holds.

What the figure measures: Energy below the displayed 0%, measured on a Model 3 in our fleet with this pack: median of twelve measurement runs in both directions, range 3.43 to 4.16 kWh.

Why not: Documented only by owners' reports in a forum, and a forum figure alone is not enough for us to set or change a figure. The reports do show which way the announced correction goes.

What the figure measures: The “Full pack when new” value that diagnostic apps read from the battery management system: 84.2 to 84.5 kWh.
Why not: On new vehicles the field is considered unreliable. Owners report that their battery did not reach it even at handover.

- Register route: from the WLTP consumption and range that the Dutch vehicle authority RDW lists for each version, the energy drawn from the grid is 94.0 to 94.5 kWh: 94.5 (H5MR), 94.4 (H5MA), 94.2 (H5MD) and 94.0 kWh (H5MN). With the charging efficiency from the EPA tests (88.7%), that is 83.4 to 83.8 kWh until the car stops. The charging efficiency was measured on a different pack and carries about ± 2% when transferred. (register)

- Our own fleet: a vehicle whose pack is documented shows a full pack of 81.7 kWh after 6,000 km. A second, whose pack we infer only from the measurement, reaches 81.3 kWh after 11,000 km in a single measurement run. Against 84.7 kWh, that would be 96% after 6,000 km, which fits poorly with so young a battery. (our own measurement · Sample: 2)
What we do not know
- There is no EPA measurement for LG packs. The 84.7 kWh come from an unofficial source, and we have no figure from an authority or the manufacturer for this pack's capacity when new. The evidence for this row is thin.
- So far we have measured the buffer on a single vehicle.
What will change
We consider this calculation in need of correction. What is documented today is a range: when new, the full pack was at least the 81.7 kWh our vehicle shows after 6,000 km, and the register route gives 83.4 to 83.8 kWh on the physical scale, with about ± 2% from the transferred charging efficiency. With the buffer share measured in our fleet, 4.3 to 4.8%, that puts about 77.8 to 81.8 kWh above the displayed zero. Today's 81.1 kWh sit at the upper end; owners' reports and our vehicle at 6,000 km point to the lower part. We will set the new figure once a source supports it, and the change will then appear in the change log with its date, source and effect.
