Used Renault Zoe: Battery, Rented vs. Owned, SoH
Variants & batteries at a glance
| Variant | Period (EU) | Usable capacity | Cell chemistry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 kWh era (Q210 / R210 / R240) | 2013 – 2016/17 | approx. 22 (23.3 per data sheet) | NMC |
| ZE40 (41 kWh) | 10/2016 – 2019 | approx. 41 | NMC |
| ZE50 (52 kWh) | 8/2019 – 3/2024 | 52 | NMC |
22 kWh era (Q210 / R210 / R240) (2013 – 2016/17)
| Period | net kWh | Chemistry | Cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 – 2016 (Q210, R210, R240) | approx. 22 (23.3 per data sheet) | NMC | LG Chem, NMC |
The small 22 kWh pack is the critical size: even a few percent of loss costs noticeable everyday range, and nearly every car from these years was delivered with a rented battery. SoH matters less here than the contract question — Renault repairs a rented battery once it drops below 75 percent.
The Q210 charges single-phase at up to 43 kW (Chameleon charger), the R210/R240 more slowly. No DC charging (no CCS).
ZE40 (41 kWh) (10/2016 – 2019)
| Period | net kWh | Chemistry | Cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10/2016 – 2019 (R90, Q90, R110) | approx. 41 | NMC | LG Chem E63 (NMC 622), 192 cells (96s2p) |
Per the manufacturer's cell specification, the ZE40 reaches around 80 percent remaining capacity after roughly 1,400 full cycles at 25 °C — a solid figure for a small car with 300 km of range. In practice the 41 kWh pack ages more gracefully than the old 22, because each charge uses up a smaller share of the total capacity.
The Q90 charges three-phase at up to 43 kW AC, the R90/R110 at up to 22 kW. Still no CCS/DC charging.
ZE50 (52 kWh) (8/2019 – 3/2024)
| Period | net kWh | Chemistry | Cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8/2019 – 3/2024 (R110, R135) | 52 | NMC | LG Chem E78 (NMC 712), 192 cells (96s2p), pack approx. 326 kg |
The ZE50 is the most mature Zoe battery and charges at 22 kW AC as standard — ideal for a wallbox or for street parking. Important when measuring: surprisingly low BMS SoH readings circulate in the community that normalise again after calibration drives. A single displayed value is no verdict here.
22 kW AC is standard on every ZE50. DC charging (CCS) was a €1,090 option — nominally 50 kW, realistically closer to 45 kW, with drops when the battery is warm. From phase 2 on, the '41 kWh' battery is physically a ZE50 pack limited to 41 kWh in software.
For more than a decade the Zoe was Europe's best-selling electric small car — around 420,000 were built before production ended in March 2024. The used supply is correspondingly large, with prices from about €7,000 for early 22 kWh cars up to a good €25,000 for young ZE50s. On hardly any other EV does a single question decide the purchase as much as it does here: is the battery rented or owned?
Rented or owned — the decisive question
For years Renault sold the Zoe either with a rented battery (lower purchase price, but a monthly rate to Renault Bank, today Mobilize Financial Services) or with the battery included. For used buyers that means a low asking price can hide a running battery lease. Check the status against the VIN before you commit — and add the monthly rate to the total cost (details in the questions below). Renault has not sold new leases since November 2020, but many older used cars are still tied to such contracts.
Reading the SoH on a Zoe
The Zoe is one of the easiest EVs to read out: with the free CanZE app and a simple OBD2 dongle you get the SoH directly — no garage needed. On the ZE50 it is worth doing a calibration drive or a full charge first, otherwise the BMS reports pessimistic values. What separates solid proof from a single snapshot is laid out openly in our methodology.
What to look for when buying used
First the contract question (rented or owned), then the generation from the matrix: a ZE50 with 52 kWh and 22 kW charging is far more usable day to day than an early 22 kWh car. Unrelated to the battery but worth knowing: the Zoe stands out in the German TÜV report for suspension and brakes — that belongs in every inspection, though it is not a battery question.
A note on our own product: Akkubrief starts with Tesla; Renault and VW follow. If you drive a Zoe or plan to buy one, sign up via the waiting list under "another EV" — we will get in touch as soon as we support the Zoe.
Battery warranty
Renault warrants the battery for 8 years with at least 66% remaining capacity. Mileage limits and exceptions are shown with the variants above and in the questions below.
