The Model Y was Europe's best-selling EV in 2022 and 2023 — and exactly those model years are now coming off lease into the used market. The battery landscape is messier than on the Model 3: two factories, two LFP suppliers, and since 2025 the Juniper facelift.

What to look for when buying used

Start with origin and variant (VIN prefix, table above) — on the RWD it decides which LFP pack is fitted. Only compare SoH figures within the same pack generation, and never judge from the range display; on LFP in particular, an uncalibrated BMS can fake low figures. Keep an eye on the warranty limit: 160,000 km on the RWD arrives faster than high-mileage drivers expect, and the remaining warranty is a price argument in both directions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my Model Y came from Shanghai or Grünheide?

The VIN tells you: LRW stands for Shanghai, XP7 for Grünheide. It matters most on the RWD variants, because they were built with different LFP packs (CATL and BYD Blade respectively).

Is the BYD Blade battery worse than the CATL one?

No — it is different. Both are LFP chemistries; the BYD pack charges faster at low states of charge, but published capacity figures differ between sources. For a specific car, the measured condition counts, not the supplier.

Which warranty mileage applies to my Model Y?

8 years for all of them — but 160,000 km on RWD/Standard and 192,000 km on Long Range and Performance, each with 70 percent minimum capacity and whichever comes first.

How much degradation is normal on a Model Y?

The pattern matches the Model 3: a noticeable drop over the first year or two, then a flat curve. A single SoH figure says little — compare within the same pack generation, and ask for proof on the specific car.
